M Patton asked:

In many cases medical assistants wishing to advance their education, attending classes at a traditional junior college or vocational school just isn’t possible. With family commitments, part time or full time jobs and their location traditional schooling might not be an option. Fortunately, there are now numerous online medical assistant programs, where people can study and receive their certificate online. Often, online education lets you complete the medical assistant course in fewer months than it would take in a classroom, so it appeals to people who are looking to upgrade their education or make a career change in a short amount of time.

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly.

The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner’s specialty. In small practices, medical assistants usually do many different kinds of tasks, handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Some medical assistants are still trained on the job, but many now complete formal programs at junior colleges, vocational schools, technical school or online medical assistant programs.

Online medical assistant education does take discipline and hard work, and you must be willing to devote time each day to studying. Some people prefer learning in a classroom, so keep in mind that you’ll be on your own and responsible for completing a set amount of work each week or month. Online medical assistant schools are definitely convenient, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier than attending a local traditional junior college or trade school.

With programs such as the online medical assistant program offered by St. Augustine School of Medical Assistants at www.medassistant.org you will have access to teachers and tutors who you can contact online or via phone if you have problems or questions. Also, a lot of online medical assistant programs have a very flexible completion time, so you may be able to finish the course at your own pace. If you are motivated to succeed, and looking for an alternative to traditional classroom learning, online education can be a rewarding way to achieve your educational goals.

Often online medical assistant courses are so convenient that you can complete the entire program at your own pace and study all classes online at anytime around the world. Many medical assistant programs also provide online training in introductory laboratory skills and basic clinical tasks for medical assistants. A typical medical assistant program will include classes in: basic medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, medical office professionalism, patient communication, medical records, scheduling appointments, medical billing and coding, infection control, emergency care, patient history and physicals, EKG, lab testing, specimen collection, patient medications and related medical areas.

According to the United States Department of Labor, medical assistants held about 417,000 jobs in 2006. About 62 percent worked in offices of physicians, 12 percent worked in public and private hospitals, including inpatient and outpatient facilities and 11 percent worked in offices of other health practitioners, such as chiropractors, optometrists, and podiatrists. Most of the remainder worked in other health care industries such as outpatient care centers and nursing and residential care facilities.

Employment is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2006-16 decade. Job opportunities should be excellent, particularly for those with formal training or experience. As such online medical assistant programs are often an excellent choice for students interested in a career as a medical assistant.

Kidney Cancer Causes Symptoms Information With Treatment

| Diseases And Conditions | Thursday, February 4th, 2010
cancer information
Juliet Cohen asked:

Most cancers are named after the part of the body where the cancer first begins, and kidney cancer is no exception. As kidney cancer grows, it may invade organs near the kidney. Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys two large, bean-shaped organs one located to the left, and the other to the right of the backbone. Some of the areas it affects are the liver , colon, and pancreas . Renal is the Latin word for kidney, and kidney cancer may also be referred to as renal cancer. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from the original tumor and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. When kidney cancer spreads, cancer cells may appear in the lymph nodes.

Causes of Kidney Cancer

The common Causes and risk factors of Kidney Cancer :

Smoking.

High blood pressure.

Obesity.

Poor diet.

Tuberous sclerosis.

Family history.

Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

Some Symptoms of Kidney Cancer :

A lump or mass in the kidney area.

Weight loss.

High blood pressure.

Side pain that does not go away.

Blood in the urine.

Loss of appetite.

Fever.

Fatigue.

Treatment of Kidney Cancer

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells, and is also sometimes used to relieve pain when kidney cancer has spread to the bone.

Biological therapy is a treatment that uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells.

Hormone therapy is used in a small number of patients with advanced kidney cancer to try to control the growth of cancer cells.

The whole kidney is removed along with the adrenal gland, tissue around the kidney, and, sometimes, lymph nodes in the area.

Zeolites - How Do They Affect Cancer?

| Diseases And Conditions | Monday, January 25th, 2010
cancer information
John Gaydon asked:

NCD

If you look around the internet, you will find many references to Activated Liquid Zeolite and its use with Cancer. This article discusses some of the information, and attempts to take a rational viewpoint of the material with regard to what Zeolite actually does in the human body.

Recently, while in Las Vegas, I was told that preliminary research has been done taking Zeolite with a chemotherapy drug, Cyclophosphamine. Apparently this drug causes a toxin called “acrolene” when ingested which has toxic side effects. When the Activated Liquid Zeolite is taken in conjunction with the drug, the toxic effects are eliminated. This is preliminary research and it will be many years before this connection is proven by published scientific papers. It may explain why some people have less side effects from treatment when they are taking the Activated Liquid Zeolite as well.

First there is Jonathan Campbell, who asserts that activated liquid Zeolite can cause cancer. There is no evidence to back this claim. Mr Campbell sells an alternate cancer cure and has a vested interest in discrediting other products. Furthermore there are 3 classes of Zeolite. One includes asbestos, which definitely causes lung cancer. The sheath like Zeolites, of which Clinoptilolite, the Zeolite used in activated zeolite products, has been certified as GRAS (generally recognised as safe) status by the FDA in the US. This is the highest level of safety possible. Who do you trust, the FDA, or Mr Campbell?

Now, let’s look at some of the research done with regards to Cancer and Zeolite.

In an article titled “Natural zeolite clinoptilolite: new adjuvant in anticancer therapy” published in the Journal of Molecular Medicine Volume 78, Number 12 / February 2001, research is detailed with Mice, Dogs and Rats, indicating the use of Zeolite reduces skin cancer tumour growth.

It states, “In vitro tissue culture studies showed that finely ground clinoptilolite inhibits protein kinase B (c-Akt), induces expression of p21WAF1/CIP1 and p27KIP1 tumor suppressor proteins, and blocks cell growth in several cancer cell lines. These data indicate that clinoptilolite treatment might affect cancer growth by attenuating survival signals and inducing tumor suppressor genes in treated cells”.

While this is not a study on humans, it does indicate that the use of Zeolite has some function at least in animals in tumour suppression. The p21 gene is known by scientists to suppress tumours and one of the great scientific debates is how to trigger this gene in cancer patients.

The following information is quoted on many websites. To my knowledge, it has not been substantiated or published, and the study was done by Lifelink Pharmaceuticals, of which Rik Deitsch is a director. It therefore must be taken with a grain of salt!

Although only one small human trial has been conducted, the results were intriguing: 78% full remission for stage 4 cancer patients (with various types of cancer). The study was an open-label trial conducted by the researchers at LifeLink Pharmaceuticals in Ohio. Although one small study is not grounds for leaping to solid conclusions about cancer, this result is promising enough to warrant additional investigation. Any anti-cancer effect is probably due to NCD’s ability to induce tumor suppressor genes that cause the body to not only halt the growth of tumor cells, but actually destroy such tumors.

Now, you must make up your own mind whether animal studies can be applied to humans, or whether Lifelink’s study is fact or fiction. All we can do is to quote the information available.
There are some other areas where Natural Cellular Defense could definitely help with many disease states. One is the area of body pH. Studies done invitro (in a test tube) indicate that with a pH of 7.4 or higher, cancer cells become dormant. This would indicate that if the body’s pH can be raised to this level, it is possible that it could slow down or even stop the spread of cancer.

Dr. William Kelley, in an article titled, “Cancer - Self Treatment”, suggests that “There is research indicating that cancer grows slowly in a highly acid environment (because the acids cause it to partially destroy itself) and may actually grow more quickly as your body becomes more alkaline prior to reaching the healthy pH slightly above 7.4 where the cancer becomes dormant. Therefore, you will want to get your pH above 7.4 as quickly as possible by every means available.”

This would indicate that when raising pH, it is important that it is done as quickly as possible and that as pH rises, cancer activity can increase for a while. So, one would have to be really convinced that a pH of 7.4 does effectively stop the spread of the disease before considering this action.

Often there is a challenge with Natural Remedies in that sometimes indications get worse before they normalise. This leads many physicians to recommend against the use of such products, because they see any worsening of the situation as alarming. Again, you will have to make your own mind up about this. The question then is to research alternate pathways and decide the likely outcome in each case!

Natural Cellular Defense, taken regularly, will raise pH into the 7.4 zone and keep it there, which I think is a good thing!

Vic Shayne, PhD in an article called’ “Ignoring the Link Between Toxins and Cancer” states, “With all of the cancer information and disinformation broadcasted continually through the major news media, rarely do we hear a mention of the greatest threat to our health - and the most prevalent cause of cancer: toxins.”

More evidence is emerging every day that there is a relationship between environmental toxins and cancer. A recent article in the Vancouver Sun stated, ” Banned pesticides and other toxic chemicals lingering in the environment put people at an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to a B.C. Cancer Agency study”.

We are rapidly approaching a point where there is little doubt that toxins are affecting our health in a negative way. In 1907 there were less than 7% of deaths from cancer. At that time no chemicals were used in agriculture. Today the death rate from cancer is over 30% and of course we have thousands of toxic substances in our food, water and air. Is this a coincidence? You decide!

Natural Cellular Defense, or Zeolite, is effective in removing toxins, particularly heavy metals and organic chemicals such as dioxin, deildrin and benzene. We have done hair analysis tests before and after using the product, and although this is not a scientific controlled study, the results are documented by lab reports and are quite impressive.

Research was published in an article titled, “Zeolite Binds to Benzene” (Active Crystallography 1996). This shows how in a laboratory, the Zeolite molecules combine with benzene to remove it from the body.

Conclusion. In summary, we know that Activated liquid Zeolite increases heavy metal secretion by 8-20 times baseline. We know that it increases pH to the 7.4 range. We know that it removes toxins and heavy metals from the body.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the product will give results with any particular medical condition. We suggest you do your research. If an out of balance pH or toxic overload are likely causes of a condition, adding activated liquid zeolite to your regime won’t do any harm, and it just might work. You have very little to lose and possibly much to gain.

How to Prevent Cancer with Proper Diet and Supplements

| Diseases And Conditions | Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
cancer center
Knut Holt asked:

By epidemiological studies and by direct trials, much evidence has by now been gathered about the cancer prevention effects of certain diet measures, of specific food sources and of specific supplements of natural substances.

GENERAL DIET ADVICES

A diet with the aim of preventing cancer is generally the same as a diet to prevent heart disease and other diseases. Such a diet consists of:

-Whole cereals, peas, beans, vegetables, fruit, fish, mushrooms, fouls and seafood, and just a moderate amount of red meat,

-Just a moderate amount of fat.

-Ideally most fat one eats, should be of the type mono-unsaturated. One also needs some poly-unsaturated fat of the types omega-3, and omega 6, but not too much of omega-6. The consumption of saturated fat should be moderate.

In order to achieve right fat balance, much of the fat supply should come from a blending of sources like olive, olive oil, canola oil, nuts, nut oil, sunflower, sunflower oil, fish and fish oil.

You can include soy oil and corn oil in the diet, but do not only use such oil types in order to avoid getting too much poly-unsaturated fat of the omega-6-type.

-Just a very moderate amount of butter, coconut oil and palm oil. A high consumption of these fat sources gives you too much saturated fat.

-Avoid altogether fat that has been chemically altered, giving so-called trans-fat. This type of fat is often found in margarine, cookies, snacks, fast food and other pre-made food.

-Just a very moderate amount of sugar, refined flour or refined cereals.

-Just a moderate consumption of tranquilizers and stimulants as Alcohol and caffeine.

Just a moderate amount of salt in the food. However, in warm weather and by hard physical work, you will need more salt.

SPECIFIC FOODS AND DRINKS TO USE

A diet with generally much fruit and vegetables has proven to help prevent cancer. Optimally a person should eat five fruits or vegetables each day, and those should be raw or carefully cooked, so that the nutrients are not washed out by the cooking.

Generally plants, fruits and spices with a strong colour or a strong taste have cancer preventing effects because of the contents of bioflavonids and other anti-oxidants.

Broccoli, cabbage, mustard, kale, and cauliflower are vegetables with proven strong cancer preventing effects, probably due to the content of indole-3-carbinole.

Onion and garlic are also thought to help prevent cancer.

Whole grain and bread made of whole grain will help prevent colon cancer because of the fibre content and possibly also because of the vitamins and minerals contained.

Red peppers give a protecting effect against prostate cancer.

Eating fish, and especially fat fish, some times each week also have a protecting effect against prostate cancer.

Evidence points to the conclusion that green tea can help prevent cancer. However studies so far undertaken do not sort out all other variables that may give the same result.

Some studies have indicated that drinking coffee reduces the incidence of cancer, but others studies have thrown doubt upon these results.

SUPPLEMENTS OF VITAMINS AND OTHER SUBSTANCES

Her are listed the most important cancer preventing effects suggested by results from recent projects. However, research are going on, and these results are not yet complete or absolutely certain.

These substances give general cancer prevention effects: Sulforaphanes found in broccoli and other crusiferous vegetables.

Colo-rectal cancer: These substances help protect against colo-rectal cancer: Alfa-tocoferole (a kind of Vitamin E), Vitamin B-6  (pyridoxine), Folic acid / folate in combination with other B-vitamins, Selenium, Indol-3-carbinol from crusiferous vegetables, Genistein from soy, and possibly also vitamin D.

Gastric cancer: Substances that help prevent gastric cancer, and even help cure changes that can evolve into gastric cancer are: Vitamin C, Beta-carotene, (a precursor of alfa-tocoferole ), Indol-3-carbinol from crusiferous vegetables, Genistein from soy.

Breast Cancer: The incidence of breast cancer can be lowered by: Folic acid / folate, Vitamin B-6  (pyridoxine), Selenium, and possibly vitamin D.

Prostate Cancer: These substances seem to help protect against Prostate cancer: Celenium and Alfa-tocoferole (a kind of Vitamine E). A long study is under way, but the results from the study are not conclusive yet.

Bladder cancer: The chance of getting bladder cancer is lowered by: Alfa-tocoferole (a kind of Vitamine E).

Lung cancer: Substances that gives protection against Lung Cancer are: Isoflavones from soy. Indol-3-carbinol from boccoli and other crusiferous vegetables, Genistein from soy, and possibly Vitamin D.

Results from research projects suggest that supplements added to the diet to prevent cancer should contain many working substances derived from natural sources, and that it is not wise to use heavy doses of just one substance.

NUTRIENTS THAT MAY HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT

Beta-carotene and vitamine A supplements may increase the chance for heavy smokers of getting lung cancer and other cancers caused by smoking, according to results from epidemologic studies.

However, these vitamins in the food does not increase this risk. It is not clear what effect beta-carotene have on lung cancer in combination with other supplements or by non-smokers. The results from these studies are also controversial.

Complete Information on Fallopian Tube Cancer

| Diseases And Conditions | Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
cancer information
Juliet Cohen asked:

Fallopian tube cancer is a cancer which affects the uterine trompex reproductive system female. It is more common for cancer to the diffusion with a fallopian tube elsewhere inside of the body that so that a new cancer develops in the Fallopian tube. The cancer of Fallopian tube typically assigns women between the ages of 50 and 60. The symptoms of fallopian tube cancer include the bleeding, the abdominal exercise. Cabdominal pain which is relieved by a passage of blood or an aqueous discharge can be an indicator of cancer of Fallopian tube. Fallopian tube cancer accounts for only 2% of gynaecological cancers of cancer.

The symptoms of fallopian tube cancer can also imitate those of other gynaecological problems. Some of the more common symptoms of this disease can include the abnormal bleeding, the abdominal pain or a feeling of pressure in the abdomen, the abnormal discharge which is white, clear or rosâtre and a pelvic mass per hour of the diagnosis, which is present in until two-third of patients. The cancer of Fallopian tube typically assigns women between the ages of 50 and 60. It is more common in the Caucasian women who had little or the aucuns children.

There is proof that women who have inherited the gene linked to breast and ovarian cancer, called BRCA1, are also at an increased risk of developing fallopian tube cancer. The treatment depends size and stage on cancer, and if it deviated with other sectors from the body. The treatment for the cancer of Fallopian tube implies usually the surgery. The surgery comprises usually the displacement of the uterus, the cervix, of the uterine trompex and the ovaries, a process called a total abdominal hysterectomy. The therapy of chemotherapy will depend on your age, your desire to have children, like the type and the stage of your tumour.

Chemotherapy typically includes the paclitaxel (Taxol) and the carboplatin. Chemotherapy is called the systemic treatment because drug enters the blood stream, travels by the body and can kill out of the cells of cancer in all the body. For some cancers, the radiation therapy is useful. For the cancer which deviated with other parts of the body, removing as much cancer that possible improves the bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy surgery to remove all the two uterine trompex and their ovaries, as well as the epiploon.

Juliet Cohen asked:

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon and/or rectum. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second superior cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. In the United States, it is the fourth most common cancer in men and women. Colon cancer and rectal cancer have many features in common. They are discussed together here except for the section about treatment, where they are discussed separately. Globally, cancer of the colon and rectum is the third leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth leading cause of cancer in females. The frequency of colorectal cancer varies around the world.

It is common in the Western world and is rare in Asia and Africa. In countries where the people have adopted western diets, the incidence of colorectal cancer is increasing. Cancer that starts in these different areas may cause different symptoms. In most cases, colorectal cancers develop slowly over many years. The risk of developing colorectal cancer more common in people over 50. Women who have a history of ovarian, uterine or breast cancer have a somewhat increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. A diet high in fat and calories and low in fiber may be linked to a greater risk of developing colorectal cancer.

People with diabetes have a 30-40% increased risk of developing colon cancer. Parents, siblings, and children of a person who has had colorectal cancer are somewhat more likely to develop colorectal cancer themselves. If many family members have had colorectal cancer, the risk increases even more. About 112,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer annually, and about 41,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed each year. Signs and symptoms of colon cancer include change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple of weeks.

Complete Information on Anal Cancer With Treatment and Prevention

| Diseases And Conditions | Saturday, November 21st, 2009
cancer information
Juliet Cohen asked:

Anal cancer is a uncommon form of cancer that occurs in the anus. There are amny other risk factors for Anal cancer. Anus is the opening at the end of the rectum around which body waste passes. The skin around the outside of the anus is called the perianal area. Tumors in this area are skin tumors, not anal cancer. Cancer in the outer part of the anus is more likely to occur in men, cancer of the inner part of the rectum is more likely to occur in women. Having multiple sex partners or having anal sex, due to the increased risk of exposure to the HPV virus. Current smokers are several times more likely to develop anal cancer compared with nonsmokers. Inflammation resulting from benign analy retarted, such as hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, has been considered to cause a predisposition to anal cancer.

Anal cancer is usually a disease of the older population. Anal cancer is typically a squamous cell carcinoma that arises near the squamocolumnar junction. The rate of infection of HPV is increased in patients with HIV even if they do not engage in anal receptive intercourse and do not have evidence of suppression of their immune system. Currently, anal cancer is not considered an AIDS defining illness. However, frequently, patients who have been newly diagnosed with anal cancer are tested for HIV if they have other risk factors for infection with HIV. Although there appears to be an increased rate of anal cancer in patients who have benign anal conditions such as anal fistulae, anal fissures, perianal abscesses, or hemorrhoids, it does not appear that these benign conditions are a cause of anal cancer.

Some basics of anal cancer cause no symptoms at all. But bleeding occurs in more than half of patients and is usually the first sign of the disease. Pain or lumps in the anal area may be a symptom. Anal itching and discharge can also be signs of anal cancer. At first, most people assume that hemorrhoids are the cause of their bleeding. Itching can also be a symptom. Occasionally, patients have the sensation of having a mass in the anus and may experience itching or anal discharge. In certain patients, these symptoms may be associated with the presence of warts in the anal region. Rarely, in advanced cases, anal cancers can disrupt the function of the anal muscles, resulting in loss of control of bowel movements. There are a number of benign conditions, such as hemorrhoids, fissures, or anal warts that can cause similar symptoms. But if any of the signs or symptoms of anal cancer are present, discuss them with your doctor without delay.

There are treatments present for all patients with anal cancer. Like most cancers, anal cancer is best treated when it is found early. Possible treatments include radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. Your treatment will depend whether the tumor has spread, and on the type, size and location of the tumor. Surgery is a common way to diagnose and treat anal cancer. Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be taken by pill, or it may be put into the body by a needle in a vein or muscle. Radiation therapy uses x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body or from putting materials that produce radiation through thin plastic tubes in the area where the cancer cells are found. Radiation can be used alone or in addition to other treatments.

Detailed Information on Lung Cancer

| Diseases And Conditions | Saturday, October 31st, 2009
cancer information
Juliet Cohen asked:

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. It is responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, among both men and women. An estimated 173,700 new cases of lung cancer and an estimated 160,440 deaths from lung cancer will occur in the United States. It claims more lives each year than colon, prostate, lymph and breast cancers combined.Cigarette smoking causes most lung cancers. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase risk.Asbestos can cause a variety of lung diseases, including lung cancer. There is a synergistic effect between tobacco smoking.

The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood), chest pain ,repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis and weight loss. Many lung cancers have a rich blood supply. The surface of the cancer may be breakable, leading to bleeding from the cancer into the airway. Treatment for lung cancer depends on the cancer’s specific cell type, how far it has spread, and the patient’s performance status. Common treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Wedge resection to remove a small section of lung that contains the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue. Lobectomy to remove the entire lobe of one lung. Pneumonectomy to remove an entire lung. Bevacizumab stops a tumor from creating a new blood supply.

Bevacizumab is usually used in combination with chemotherapy and is approved for advanced and recurrent non-small cell lung cancer. Photodynamic therapy—(PDT) may be particularly useful for the care of persons with inoperable lung cancer. Photodynamic therapy inaugurated with the injection of a light-activated drug (e.g., photofrin/polyhaematoporphyrin, lumin). Elecctrosurgery is surgery performed using a needle, bulb, or disk electrode. Take precautions to protect yourself from exposure to toxic chemicals at work. Choose a healthy diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables. At least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. Biking, swimming and walking are good choices. Stop smoking now. Quitting reduces your risk of lung cancer, even if you’ve smoked for years.

Lung Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Stop smoking now. Quitting reduces your risk of lung cancer.

2. Avoid areas where people smoke, such as bars and restaurants.

3. Choose a healthy diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables.

4. Exercise daily biking, swimming and walking are good choices.

5. Avoid carcinogens at work. Take precautions to protect yourself.

Mild Medications for High Blood Pressure - Understanding the Available Medications

| Diseases And Conditions | Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
medical
Alvin Hopkinson asked:

Many individuals are put on medications to control their high blood pressure. Depending greatly on the severity of the blood pressure you might be able to discontinue using the medications with some modifications to your lifestyle and diet.

Many doctors will begin a medicinal treatment with mild medications for high blood pressure and sometimes it might be necessary to start off with a more vigorous medication and slowly work down to a mild one.

Understanding the different types of medications and how they actually treat and benefit the condition is important. Throughout this article you will learn the medications that are used for treating high blood pressure and gaining control over it. Generally, all of the medications that are currently being used for the successful treatment of high blood pressure fall into one of five categories.

The category or type of medication your doctor will put you on will greatly depend on a few factors. Among them are the level of high blood pressure you have, existing medical conditions, current medications you take as well as family medical history. Here are the categories:

* Vasodilators

* Diuretics

* Angiotensin II receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors

* Calcium channel blockers

* Beta-adrenergic blocking agents

Let’s start off by discussing the Vasodilators. These are designed to make the veins and the arteries wider, thus allow the blood to flow a bit more freely. In some circumstances a doctor might prefer to combine another medication with a Vasodilator to get your blood pressure to the ideal level and maintain it.

ACE Inhibitors is the next medication we will briefly discuss. These are among the most popular medications prescribed for treating and stabilizing blood pressure. These are designed to successfully relieve the stress of blood vessel contraction as well as regulate the blood flow and decrease the blood pressure. ACE inhibitors will then convert the hormone that is usually inactive into an active hormone.

The next medication is the Calcium Channel Blockers. These decrease the blood pressure because they relax the blood flow and the vessels themselves. The blood generally is able to flow with ease once the medication gets into the individuals system. The relaxation enhances the flow of the blood without stressing the heart.

Beta blockers or Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are often the first choice for many doctors in treating high blood pressure. Basically, this type of medication will minimize the stress on the heart by limiting the work that is needed to be done by the heart.

The number of beats the heart has to do to make sure the blood is pumping is lowered because the heart no longer has to work as hard. This also decreases the intensity of the heartbeats, thus combining all of this the blood pressure is often successfully modified and reduced to a healthy level.

Mild medications for high blood pressure will be determined generally on an individual patient basis. The prescribing doctor will take into consideration several other health related issues before prescribing the best medication for your blood pressure. Be sure you are giving as much information to your doctor as you can about your medical history and your family medical history.

How to Treat Brain Cancer

| Diseases And Conditions | Monday, August 24th, 2009
cancer center
peterhutch asked:

The brain is a soft, spongy mass of tissue. It is protected by the bones of the skull and three thin membranes called meninges. Watery fluid called cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain. This fluid flows through spaces between the meninges and through spaces within the brain called ventricles.

Drugs that shrink tumors in other parts of the body often fail when we apply them to brain cancer, in part because so little of the drug permeates the blood-brain barrier and in part because the drugs indiscriminately attack healthy and cancerous cells, so we’re limited to lower doses,” said Sampson, a neurosurgeon at the Duke Brain Tumor Center. “Directly infusing drugs into the tumor cavity allows us to blanket the area with much higher concentrations of the drug - without causing toxicity — than we would be able to with intravenous chemotherapy.”

Brain tumors that result from this transformation and abnormal growth of brain cells are called primary brain tumors because they originate in the brain.

The purposes of surgery are to confirm that the abnormality seen on the brain scan is indeed a tumor and to remove the tumor. If the tumor cannot be removed, the surgeon will take a sample of the tumor to identify its type. In some cases, mostly in benign tumors, symptoms can be completely cured by surgical removal of the tumor. Your neurosurgeon will attempt to remove the tumor when possible.

Gliadel wafers are implanted into the cavity left in the brain after surgical removal of the brain tumor.  The wafers deliver the active drug carmustine directly to the affected area of the brain.     Depending on the size of the cavity, 7 to 8 wafers are implanted.  Each wafer is 1.45 cm in diameter, 1mm thick and contains 7.7 milligrams of carmustine — resulting in a 61.6 mg dose when eight wafers are implanted.

Neurologists and other brain tumor treatment team member’s work together to determine the treatment approach that best meets the each individual’s needs. Because new treatments continually develop, several options may be available for patients at different points in their treatment. The pros and cons of each option are discussed in detail during treatment planning. The treatment plan may include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Doctors must balance removing as much of the tumor as possible without harming healthy brain tissue. In many cases, the patient is brought back to consciousness while vital areas, such as those controlling speech, are worked on, according to medical experts.

Malignant brain cancer is one of the most lethal types of cancer in adults and is the second leading cause of cancer death in children. Many current ways of treating the disease fail to provide long-term management because they ineffectively target tumor cells and harm the health and vitality of normal brain cells.

The three major types of conventional brain cancer treatment are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
