The Journey Through Cancer and the Seven Levels of Healing®

Jeremy R. Geffen, Md, Facp asked:

As a medical oncologist, I have been honored to serve as physician, guide, and friend to thousands of individuals with cancer and their loved ones. Many heroic people have inspired and taught me a great deal about living courageously in the face of great challenges, and the unknown.

Through this process, I have come to understand the experience of cancer as a journey — filled with ups and downs, periods of calm and tumult, and extraordinary opportunities for healing and transformation. I have also seen, again and again, what powerful roles the mind, heart, and spirit can play in impacting every individual’s journey through cancer.

It is normal and common to feel overwhelmed by a cancer diagnosis, as anyone who has been through this experience can attest. Unfortunately, it is not yet normal or common for individuals and families to receive skillful, coherent, and comprehensive help in navigating the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of cancer. For many, this is a painful and tragically missed opportunity. But it doesn’t have to be so.

Over many years of running an integrative cancer center, I was repeatedly asked: “Doctor, in addition to radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, what else can I do to help myself? What should I eat? What vitamins should I take? What alternative therapies should I use?” And, “How can I deal with the mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges I am encountering?”

In searching for meaningful and practical answers, I saw an important pattern. I recognized that all questions and concerns encountered by patients and their loved ones fall into one of seven distinct, but inter-related domains of inquiry and exploration. I call these The Seven Levels of Healing® and describe them in detail in The Journey Through Cancer: Healing and Transforming the Whole Person. They are a powerful guide for navigating all aspects of the cancer journey, including the mental, emotional, and spiritual — as well as physical — ones.

The Seven Levels are briefly summarized below, along with some practical suggestions for using them right away:

Level One: Education and Information. Understanding your medical care is important to achieving the best outcome. Feeling clear and confident about your care helps put your mind at ease and enhances your ability to enter the deeper dimensions of healing. Find an experienced oncologist whom you trust, and who answers your questions fully. Don’t make hasty decisions. Make decisions based on knowledge and understanding, not on fear.

Level Two: Connection with Others. This is a powerful component of healing. Family members can only do so much. Seek additional support from friends, clergy, and self-help organizations. Join a support group. Talk with others who have navigated the journey though cancer and found positive solutions.

Level Three: The Body as Garden. Conventional treatments remain the foundation of leading-edge cancer care. However, taking an active role in caring for your body also includes good nutrition, exercise, massage, relaxation, and other complementary therapies. These can nourish and strengthen the body, soothe and calm the mind, and invigorate the heart and spirit.

Level Four: Emotional Healing. Cancer can be an emotional roller-coaster. Everyone involved can experience feelings of fear, anger, depression, and doubt — as well as gratitude and love. Keep a journal to explore and release your innermost feelings. Work with a counselor or therapist. Don’t neglect your emotional self.

Level Five: The Nature of Mind. Mental anxiety is often another part of cancer. The mind can work for or against you, depending on your focus. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, examine your thoughts and beliefs and see if they are serving you. When fear and doubt are replaced with clarity and understanding, anxiety often diminishes. Ask yourself, “What are the blessings in my life? What am I truly grateful for?”

Level Six: Life Assessment. It is very empowering to discover the deepest meaning and purpose of your life, especially in the face of cancer. Answering three important questions can help clarify your priorities and liberate enormous time, energy, and resources for healing:

What is the meaning and purpose of my life?

What are my most important goals for the coming year?

How do I want to be remembered by those whom I love?

Level Seven: The Nature of Spirit. There is no better time than now to fully honor and embrace your spiritual essence. It is the source not only of the love, joy, and fulfillment that we all seek, but physical healing as well. Explore this through meditation, reflection, prayer, time in nature, and sharing with loved ones. Remember that your body needs love and care, but your mind, heart, and spirit need and deserve these as well.

Coping With Cancer Pain

| Diseases And Conditions | Saturday, May 30th, 2009
cancer center
Hemant Yagnick, M.D. asked:

Patients with advanced cancer often have pain as their chief complaint. Although advances in cancer treatment have lengthened survival among cancer patients, cancer pain remains under treated in patients. It has been estimated that 25% of all cancer patients who die, do so without adequate pain relief, despite the fact that the tools for adequate pain control are available. With advanced disease, 90% of patients with cancer require strong opiates to control their pain. However, many physicians remain concerned about inadvertently making a patient an addict if they prescribe narcotics to treat pain. Cultural and attitudinal barriers, knowledge deficits among health care professionals, and the influence of state and federal drug regulatory agencies also contribute to the fact that the pain experienced by cancer patients, all too often, is under-treated.

Cancer pain is classified according to pain duration and quality. Duration of pain can denote the acute or chronic nature of pain. It is common to experience anxiety, apprehension and depression in patients with cancer pain. The types of pain most commonly experienced by cancer patients are:

- Acute cancer related pain

- Chronic cancer related pain

- Pain unrelated to cancer

- Pain in opiod tolerant cancer patients

- End of life pain

After an appropriate medical history review and a physical, a pain physician will tailor a suitable pain treatment program. Because everyone has a different response to medications and therapies, the other types of drugs with pain relievers. They include anti-inflammatory steroids, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants. These drugs may be effective treatments for specific types of pain or pain with specific causes. For example, the doctor may prescribe antidepressants to help relieve certain types of pain. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the patient is suffering from depression. Similarly, steroids often are effective in relieving pain associated with inflammation.

Cancer pain can be controlled effectively through therapies already available today. Pain treatments range from mild, nonprescription pain relievers, to stronger prescription medications, to neurological surgery, to alternative therapies such as relaxation, biofeedback, guided imagery, and acupuncture.

Oncologists and pain specialists can devise a treatment plan based on the type and severity of pain, side effects, and how the patient responds to the treatment. Some common approaches to treat cancer pain include:

1. Oral Medicines- Aspirin & NSAIDs, Opiods, Adjuvants

2. Intravenous drugs

3. Transdermal drug delivery systems

4. Nerve blocks

5. Interthecal drug pumps

6. Neuroablstive procedures

Although they have cancer pain, many patients are afraid of getting addicted to pain medicines. When cancer pain medicines are given and taken in the right way, patients rarely become addicted to them. To be sure, they should talk to the doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about how to use pain medications safely. Many patients only need pain medicines for a time, until the cause of the pain goes away due to other treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. When they are ready to stop taking the medicine, the doctor gradually lowers the amount of medicine they take. By the time they stop using it completely, the body has had time to adjust. Some patients will need to take pain medicines for the long-term. Taking medicines regularly should not make patients feel like an “addict.”

Physical dependence, tolerance to medication and addiction are three different issues in people treated with strong pain medications. The patient’s physician can explain the subtle but important difference between them. It’s often easier to control pain in its early stages, because it becomes severe. Therefore, it is better for cancer pain patients to ask for adequate pain relief.

A primary care physician or oncologist can help explain the possible options for pain relief and can make a referral, when necessary, to a pain medicine specialist for optimal pain management.

Fight Cancer With your Spice Rack!

| Alternative Medicine | Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Christie Pinheiro asked:

A recent study, published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians proves that the common household spice turmeric is a powerful anti-oxidant and cancer-fighting agent. Turmeric has been used in curry dishes for centuries. The evidence of turmeric’s curative powers is overwhelming, and clinical trials have begun on cancer patients all over the country.

New reports suggest that the spice Turmeric (curcuma longa) may be a potent anti-cancer fighter. Recent studies have shown that turmeric, commonly used in curry dishes, is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Turmeric may also block the formation of cancer cells. According to CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians; pre-clinical trials revealed that turmeric can slow metastasis (the transmission of cancerous cells from an original site to one or more sites elsewhere in the body).

The active cancer-fighting ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin. Curcumin, naturally yellow in color, gives curry powder its vibrant color. It has been used safely as a natural food additive for years. Yellow mustard is one example.

Previous research shows that Curcumin is also effective against Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, arthritis, and a slew of other illnesses. Curcumin is so effective for wound healing that Johnson & Johnson sells band-aids with curcumin (in India).

These initial studies are so promising that the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center is funding additional trials on turmeric’s healing properties. Its affect on breast and pancreatic cancer patients will be studied later.

And even more good news– curry tastes great, and has been used as a household spice for thousands of years. The only known side affect is stomach upset in some sensitive individuals. So add a little turmeric to your meal, it’s the spice with some major health benefits!

How Does Sunlight Affect Breast Cancer?

| Non Fiction | Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
cancer center
Kip Goldhammer asked:

If one is to believe Esther John, an epidemiologist of Northern California Cancer Center, a daily dose of sunlight can decrease the chances of breast cancer by an amazing 40%. A short walk in the sun can also relieve stress and increase blood circulation in addition to reducing the risk of breast cancer. It is a well known and researched fact that the instance of breast cancer is more in cloudy and colder regions. An exposure to the full spectrum light is inversely correlated to colon, rectal and breast cancers.

Exposure to sun stimulates production of certain hormones underneath the human skin. The Ultraviolet B rays react with a certain variety of cholesterol in the skin triggering organs like liver and kidneys to produce vitamin D3, which in fact is not a vitamin but a king of steroid that boosts the human immune system. It inhibits the growth of malignant cells and also motivates the digestive tract to absorb more calcium and hinders angiogenesis that aids growth of cancerous cells. Vitamin D3 also stops formation of blood vessels that aid cancer thus effectively curbing the malignancy of any tumors.

Vitamin D3 taken in high does can result in toxic complications. Medications administered for breast cancer thus contain Vitamin D3 in derivative form. These derivatives have been found to be effective in stopping the spread of cancer cells in breast cancer patients and reducing the size of mammary tumors.

It is a cause of grave concern that most sunscreens lotions used today block the Ultraviolet B rays thus inhibiting the formation of Vitamin D3. What the human race needs to realize today is that the harm done by sun is far less compared to the goodness that comes from its radiation. Exposure to sun benefits people having prostrate, ovarian, breast or colon cancer, osteoporosis, heart ailments and multiple sclerosis. If one can imagine statistically, people dying from the any of the above diseases are far more then people effected by skin cancer. Moreover, exposure to sun is more beneficial than detrimental as per the past 5 decades of medical research.

In spite of awareness, it has been found that almost 59% of patients admitted to the Massachusetts General Hospital have been found to be lacking in Vitamin D. In light of this it is only logical to infer that Americans are more prone to caner and other ailments compared to most other people.

Vitamin D is also available in adequate measures in certain foods like tuna, salmon almost all other varieties of fish. Having Vitamin D fortified diet may also help, but look for more information than just claims on the product labels.

What do Employers Look for when Applying for a Medical Transcriptionist Position?

| Careers | Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
medical
Amy Nutt asked:

Transcription developed gradually in the early sixties through different machines like manual and electric typewriters, computers, word processors, magnetic belts, cassettes, plastic disks and digital recordings. In the past, medical reports that were gathered for patients contain handwritten abbreviation notes that were very difficult for common people to understand.

Nowadays, a lot of healthcare providers make use of voice streaming and dictation to make transcription more effective and efficient. However, since the medical spoken language is still too complex to understand, medical transcriptionists are required to convert the spoken medical records into typewritten form.

What is a Medical Transcriptionist?

A medical transcriptionist, also called an MT, is an individual who is in charge of converting or translating a patient’s medical records to typewritten layout. Although transcriptions can also be done in handwritten form, a typewritten layout is often preferred because it is clearer and more comprehensible. These transcriptions are usually done for the purpose of charting reports and information. Much of the recordings that a medical transcriptionist works on come from either a Dictaphone machine or recorded tape.

A Medical Transcriptionist should be a practiced typist

Since the market for medical transcriptionists is growing, employers often look for a person who is a practiced typist with outstanding interpretation of what he hears through dictation. A fast typist will be able to lay out the medical records in typewritten form as the recording runs, without having to play back the Dictaphone machine or tape. This makes him more efficient in his job.

An MT should be knowledgeable with medical terms

A medical transcriptionist must have strong knowledge of medical language and terms. Since a medical transcriptionist has to record a lot of medical terms, it is essential that he knows the spelling and pronunciation of such terms. Without a good knowledge of medical terms, it is rather impossible for a person to work effectively as a medical transcriptionist.

Educational qualifications and skills required for an MT position

To be a medical transcriptionist, you must be at least a high school graduate with a diploma that is relevant to the field medical transcription. You will have an advantage if you have at least one to three years of working experience that is in line with the duties and responsibilities of a medical transcriptionist. As a medical transcriptionist, you must be able to comprehend dictation of medical terms and you need to possess short hand skills. You should also be good in verbal communication and spelling, and have excellent memory skills so that you can sort out, count, check and authenticate numbers with accuracy.

Other skills required of an MT

It is essential that you are able to use and operate some of the basic office machines, equipments and computers. A medical transcriptionist needs to possess excellent records maintenance ability and a profound knowledge of medical transcription practices and guidelines. You have to be resourceful enough to be able to use a wide selection of professional reference materials and work under pressure with limited time and minimal supervision.

You must also have the skills to use proper grammar, capitalization rules, and correct punctuations. As you progress in your job as a medical transcriptionist, you will be required to perform quality assurance check to ascertain that the medical reports are correctly done. You will also have to understand and apply important legal concepts like confidentiality.

As a whole, an effective and successful medical transcriptionist has to be able to decide what is essential and vital to medical reports. In other words, a medical transcriptionist has to comprehend the medical terms used in the reports, instead of just being able to identify them. A medical transcriptionist possibly will not be able to determine which parts of a report are important if he has no fundamental knowledge of the terms used by medical experts.

Breast Cancer Ribbon

| Careers | Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
cancer information
Simon Oldmann asked:

These days almost every worthy cause finds itself a proper ribbon, without getting into the debate about the use of ribbons and how people use them, there are not many ribbons that I know of that are more important than the breast cancer ribbon.

Breast cancer is a dangerous enemy, while it is true that the awareness to its risks and the understanding of the prevention measures that need to be taken on a regular basis has increased over the years and had probably saved many lives, some people are still not aware of breast cancer and others prefer to live in some sort of denial.

So why is it important to use the pink ribbon and join the fight against breast cancer? First of all it shows the most important thing a person can show, it shows that you care, its shows that you are willing to give a little of your time or energy to try and educate more people, to warn some others and to maybe, just by doing this very small action contribute to saving a life. This is not a joke, sometimes awareness is all that separates the ill from the healthy and the dead from the living, we are at an age where people are learning of new dangers every day, and with all these upcoming potential dangers of terrorism and natural disasters breast cancer has been here long enough and has cause so much pain and suffering that it certainly deserves to be treated as something we should all remember, even on a daily basis.

Every October is the international breast cancer awareness month, this is the time to try and do the most to increase the public awareness of this disease, and educate woman about the ways they can fight breast cancer, this month is also dedicated to raising money for the many different organizations and foundations that are working all year round on helping victims of breast cancer, some of these patients have no money and no funds they can use to try and treat the cancer, and these organizations help them get the support that they need.

So all you got to do is just place one of these pink ribbons on your shirt of jacket, and show the solidarity you have with the breast cancer patients, the victims and the family and friends of those who have been effected by this terrible disease. Remember that you do not have to limit yourself only to the month of October, and that it is enough for only one person to ask you about this ribbon - once a year to make a huge difference, think about hundreds, if not thousands of people like you doing the same thing every day, and each one of these people is approached by an uneducated person, how many lives can be speared.

Lets hope that in the future the fight against breast cancer, as the fight against all kinds of cancer, will achieve its goals and that this disease will claim less victims, that modern medicine and science will find cures and that more and more people around the world will live healthier and happier lives.

Advance Cancer in Ovarian Treatment

| Alternative Medicine | Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
cancer center
Drrao asked:

Ovarian cancer is one of the cancers that are found in women. It is the cancer that begins in ovarian of women. But this cancer can be treated if it is found in its initial stage.

More information meets: dr jack

Ovarian cancer is one of the fifth most common cancers found in the women. It is found that many women are diagnosed with this cancer and many women are dieing with this cancer. But this cancer can be healed if it is found in its initial stage with the proper treatment. But this disease is rarely found in its early stage so it is called as silent killer. In many cases this disease is found advanced before it is diagnosed. But now a day it is said that women have signs and symptoms before the disease has spread. So, it is an urge need that to have earlier detection before it leads any danger to us.

This Ovarian cancer is a disease produced by the brisk expansion and separation of cells within one or both ovaries reproductive glands in which the ova, or eggs, and the female sex hormones are made. It is a cancer that mainly affects the middle and upper class women in the industrialized countries as the dietary differs from others.

The most common symptoms of this disease are urinary urgency, bloating, back pain, constipation, abdominal pain creeping and swelling of abdomen, fatigue, feeling of pelvic pressure or discomfort, abnormal vaginal bleeding, leg pain, pain during sexual intercourse, loss of appetite, and others.

There are certain risk factors which may cause ovarian cancer. But if you have one or two risk factors then you are at the risk of ovarian cancer than the average women has. Some of the factors are genetic mutations, family history, age, child bearing status, infertility, ovarian systs and obesity in early childhood, consumption of food which contains high diet regularly and many others.

It is an urge need if you find to meet your doctor or physician if you find any of the above symptoms. The first need is you must have to urge for the first phase of treatment as it may harm you in the future. If the treatment is not satisfied and the there is no relief in it then you should have a follow up for it and ask your doctor for the second opinion. But as already said if you have a family background of this disease then it is a need that you must be aware of it and have a regular check ups when you find any of the symptom and if you don’t get relief from that.

The ovarian cancer can be divided into four stages. So the treatment for this depends on the stages. That is if the patient is at the first stage then it is called as the earliest stage and if he is at the fourth stage then he is at the final stage. There are many kinds of treatment like surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, natural healings, by the intake of natural supplements, usage of herbal products and many others. The surgery, chemotherapy and the radiotherapy are the modern method of curing the chronic disease like cancers.

The surgery cures the disease by removing the cancer causing tissues. The chemotherapy is the treatment in which it destroys the cancer causing cells through strong anti-cancer drugs. The other kind of therapy is the radiotherapy which kills the cancer cells through high energy radiation exposure.

Many people find difficult to accept this statement that the usage of the alternative treatment is not good when the disease reoccurs or the disease reaches the final stage. There are kinds of therapies like homeopathy, acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy, visualization, reflexology and others. At our center we treat this ovarian cancer with dietary supplements which are natural and have no harm. They treat and have made the changes in the patient’s life. You can hear there views about how they had their miraculous improvements with the usage of these medications.

The urge need of getting restore with our healthy health is we should be responsible of our own physical, spiritual and mental well being. It is we and our body’s immune system that heals the sickness that we have got as early as possible. The body is restored to healthy stimulating the immune system through diet, exercise, visualization, relaxation techniques and goal setting. The recovery is not without complications so it can be cured with proper diet, exercise and top resistance factor in warding off cancer cells. Exercise helps the lymphatic system operate efficiently. Our optimal health depends on constantly feeding those cells with proper nutrients. An essential part of cancer survival is keeping the body healthy enough for its immune system to eliminate abnormal cellular growth as it appears.

Medical Billing Outsourcing Versus In-house

| Health | Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
medical
Josh Gerson asked:

There are many compelling reasons why medical billing outsourcing to a professional medical billing and coding company makes sense. A major problem with in-house medical billing services is the human one. Management, turnover, retraining and growth. Do you have the time and money for all of that? HRM (Human Resource Management) is the most compelling single reason why physicians and other medical service providers outsource their medical billing to a medical billing company that specializes in providing this service.

HRM problems come about from two areas, employee turnover and practice growth.

Reducing Employee Turnover With Medical Billing Outsourcing:

While your practice may be lucky by having people who have stayed with you through the years, the fact remains that they will, eventually, leave. Others are faced with an on-going turnover problem. In either event, once a medical billing specialist leaves, you are forced to fill the vacant spot right away or your cash-flow may be compromised. That often means hiring someone with lesser …or worse yet very little medical billing experience. Inexperienced medical billing specialist make errors … errors that can cost your practice money or seriously delay your getting paid in a timely manner. Also, who will take the time to train your new medical billing specialist? Will you spend your time doing this? Or will you pay someone else to do it? Is that a good use of your time? Even if you still have other medical billing specialists, their use in training will take away from their time normally spent in helping to get you paid in a timely manner. Medical billing outsourcing avoids these problems all together.

Many medical practices go through high turnover periods, while others find loyal people who dedicate many years to working for the same Physician. The human resource management cycle can be very difficult for a Physician to maintain. Once the medical billing specialist leaves, the Physician is left with no other option and is usually forced to hire another medical billing specialist who has very little experience. Ask yourself this question, when would you be the most worried; when your receptionist quits or when your medical billing specialist leaves? Do you really have the time to find a medical billing specialist who is experienced and reliable and can do the right job with the amount of attention your medical billing deserves? Medical billing outsourcing is a better solution.

Growing a Professional Practice:

As your business grows, your revenues will grow and so will the medical billing and coding workload. However, your employee costs are fixed costs, while your billings and receivables are not fixed. So, when your business has grown to the point where the workload overtaxes the current medical billing personnel, you will need to add another medical billing specialist … maybe more. That is an abrupt increase in fixed costs, because now you are - in effect - overstaffed, as the volume of the workload has not as yet caught up to your newly-expanded billing capacity.

Use medical billing outsourcing to change your medical billing expenses from a fixed cost to a variable cost and improve your ability to manage your business.

When you choose medical billing outsourcing, your costs vary directly with your medical billings. If your medical billings drop, your costs drop. If your medical billings go up, your costs do not rise disproportionately. This simple fact can make your business planning easier.

Less Paperwork and Lower Employee Costs With Medical Billing Outsourcing

If you do your medical billing internally, salary is typically only about 70-75% of your employee costs when you figure in payroll taxes, FICA and insurance. Not to mention that added paperwork cost of administering them. Plus, when your medical billing specialists are sick or on vacation, you’re still paying them for not working. When you outsource your billing by taking advantage of our professional medical billing specialists, the overhead and paperwork is ours, not yours.

• Medical Billing Specialist’s Employee salary

• Medical Billing Specialist’s Employee benefits

o Worker’s compensation

o FICA

o Healthcare insurance

o Vacation, sick leave, etc.

o Performance bonus

• Computer hardware purchase & maintenance

• Software purchase & renewal

• Clearinghouse fees

• Postage

• Stationery

• Physical (Office) Space

• Training and re-training

• Recruitment costs

• YOUR time

• YOUR opportunity costs

Reduce Errors and Receive Revenue Faster With Medical Billing Outsourcing:

Medical Insurers are always looking for ways to slow down paying you. It’s how they manage their cash flow. Anything that is miscoded can cause your bill to be rejected or its payment delayed significantly. When you outsource your medical billing to our medical billing specialists, you’ll not only be getting professional medical billing services, you’ll be benefiting from a degree of accuracy that would be difficult to match internally. At Medical Billing, each submission is reviewed by a supervisor to help ensure accuracy. That “extra level of eyes” is a luxury impractical with in-house medical billing.

Our Incentive, Your Control

When you take advantage of medical billing outsourcing, you improve your cash flow and collections and reduce the costs and headaches of employee problems. And we can even offer you a line of credit at Below-Prime through Medical-Finance.com

Call now for a free consultation. Let our Medical Billing Specialists show you how to keep more of the money you make. Outsourcing your medical billing services allows the money you get to grow in direct proportion to the direction your business is going.
